Reminding a friend to pay you back is completely normal. It only gets awkward when the message is long, vague or a bit passive-aggressive. What works best is short: the amount, when you lent it, and an easy way to reply. Below are texts for different situations. Copy them, make them your own, and swap the ___ for your amount or date.
Before you write
- Check the amount and the date. If some of it has already been paid back, mention what's left.
- Decide what you're after: the full amount, part of it, or just a date to aim for.
- Message them privately, wherever you usually talk. Not in the group chat.
Before the due date
If you agreed on a date, a quick heads-up a day or two before takes most of the awkwardness away. They get time to sort it, and you don't end up waiting.
Hey! Just a reminder we said Friday for the £___. Still good?
Hi, how's things? Just so it doesn't slip: €___ by the end of the week, like we said :)
On the day
Hey! Today's the day we agreed for the £___. Could you send it over?
Hi :) Quick nudge about the £___ today. If it's easier to do it in parts, let me know and we'll sort something out.
After the due date
Being specific helps here. Instead of "whenever you can", give the amount and the date you're expecting it by.
Softer:
Hey! I think the £___ from September slipped through the cracks. When would be a good time to pay it back?
Direct:
Hi. Just a reminder about the £___ from September, it's overdue now. Could you pay it back by ___? If the full amount is tricky right now, we can split it into parts.
If they don't reply
One message is easy to miss. Give it a few days and try again, just as short.
Hey, following up on the £___. Let me know when works for you, even if it's not doable right now.
If paying it all at once is hard
Sometimes the full amount just isn't there yet. Offering to take it in parts is easier than waiting for all of it.
Happy to do it in parts, whatever works for you. Say £___ now and the rest by ___?
Log each repayment separately, with the date and the amount. That way nobody has to remember how much is left or argue about it later.
If your friend asks for more time
A new date beats "sometime later". Say yes, but ask for a specific day.
Sure, no problem. How about by ___? I'll give you a nudge the day before :)
Next time: agree on a date upfront
The easiest reminder is one you agreed on in advance. When you lend money, mention the payback date in the same message you send it with.
Here's the £___ :) Pay me back by ___, does that work?
Then a month later all you need to say is "like we agreed".
What not to write
- Guilt trips and sarcasm like "guess it slipped your mind again". People get defensive, and the conversation stops being about the money.
- Reminders in the group chat or through mutual friends.
- Long explanations of why you need the money. It's your money, you don't have to justify asking for it.
So you don't have to keep it all in your head
MoneyDue has these texts ready: gentle or direct, and different depending on whether the due date is coming up, today or already passed. You pick the language for whoever will read it: English, Polish or Ukrainian. You can edit the text and send it in your usual messenger; the app itself doesn't send anything.
If a debt has a due date, MoneyDue reminds you the day before, on the day and the day after. It also shows who owes whom, how much, and what's left after partial repayments. No account needed.
